Program philosophy
The Portfolio Clinic is a mentorship-based program focused on teaching the fundamental skills required for animation, illustration, and related visual arts programs. The curriculum emphasizes strong artistic foundations as the basis for competitive portfolios.
Instruction is delivered through practical demonstrations and structured assignments designed to promote rapid skill development while contributing directly to each student’s portfolio.
Group-based critiques, including draw-overs and targeted feedback, form a core part of the program. This process helps students clearly understand post-secondary admissions expectations through both individual and peer learning.
While acceptance cannot be guaranteed, the program is designed for motivated artists committed to growth. The small-group setting also fosters meaningful connections with peers who may become future collaborators and colleagues.

about joe
Joseph Bertrand-Azzari is a professional doodler who somehow found his way into studio animation, contributing to projects such as Space Jam: A New Legacy, Dino Ranch: Island Explorers, Final Space (Season 3), Dino Ranch (Seasons 2–3), Bubble Guppies, Abby Hatcher, 3Below, and several other shows audiences may recognize. He has survived the trenches of studio animation—tight deadlines, chaotic schedules, and teamwork fueled by little more than coffee and sheer determination.
In addition to his studio work, Joseph is an independent director with experience directing and producing short films, commercials, and music videos. This background gives him a strong, practical understanding of production pipelines and scheduling from concept to delivery.
A fun fact: his Mayan astrological sign is the lizard, which feels fitting for someone who can sit almost perfectly still at a computer for hours at a time. He is also bilingual, speaking fluent Spanish, making him a strong asset for international productions.
Joseph is also an educator who loves teaching as a way to pass on the lessons he has learned from his mentors over the years. He believes that teaching is an essential part of mastery, sharpening both craft and clarity of thought.
He is currently based in Toronto, Canada.
